Ian Newton is an ecologist especially interested in bird population limitation and migration. For many years he specialised on birds of prey and on pesticide impacts on birds. He also has a lifelong interest in land use and conservation. Over the years, he has published more than 300 papers in the scientific literature, and authored ten books on various aspects of bird ecology.
