Matthew R. Halley is an American ornithologist and historian from Phoenixville, PA, about 4 km from Mill Grove, where Audubon purportedly banded the phoebes. Halley served as resident caretaker of the historic Wyck House, where Audubon was hosted in 1824, and has extensive knowledge of archival materials relating to the early history of American science. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Drexel University, where he studies the systematics and evolution of American birds, especially thrushes (Turdidae).
