Simon is currently a PhD student at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Simon models how climate change and human land-use drive population declines in migratory animals using a suite of data science tools applied to citizen science datasets including machine learning algorithms and nascent statistical methods. With this research, Simon aims to find pragmatic and effective biodiversity conservation strategies. He also works as a scientific writer and analyst on various ecology, toxicology, and data science projects. Simon’s research interests lie primarily with birds, particularly hummingbirds, but he is involved in projects studying other at-risk species in Canada.
