Toru works as a curator/researcher at Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History and Human History, Fukuoka, Japan. He researched habitat selection of the Eurasian Magpie (Pica pica) and the reproductive strategy of wind-pollinated plants when he was a student at Kyushu University. He started research on the ecology of raptors with GPS tracking during his Post-doc at Nagasaki University and now he is continuing it with his collaborators.
