Gerald Mayr is Head of the ornithological section of Senckenberg Research Institute Frankfurt. His main research interest is the early evolution of birds and avian higher level systematics. He has published extensively on the avifauna from the Messel fossil site in Germany and other early Cenozoic fossil localities. In addition to studying the past diversity of birds, he is interested in biogeographic patterns arising from the avian fossil record and in anatomical innovations that occurred in the early evolution of birds.
