Johann van Niekerk has been conducting field research on various gamebird species in Africa since 1977 and published several papers, focusing on ecology and behaviour. He is affiliated with the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of South Africa, for the past 13 years as a research fellow. He has been working with, and was initially guided by, Professor Timothy Crowe of Cape Town University since 1978. He has two master’s degrees and a PhD.
