Lorian C. Straker is interested in bird flight and the many biological aspects related to it. The research in Eared Grebes, along side Dr. Joseph R. Jehl, started as an interest in understanding the relationship of weight loss and long distance flight, during migration. Having a good knowledge of imaging techniques, such as tomography and microscopy, he has been able to study different aspects of bird morphology and physiology related to flight. He is currently working with feather morphology to understand how its material properties and structures relate to flight dynamics in different bird groups.
