Mateo Ruiz collaborated with community-driven wetland conservation projects on the Pacific coast of Mexico for 12 years, where he developed bird monitoring programmes and co-authored a photographic guide to water birds. His research on bird communities explores species richness, hierarchical guild structure, migration, and hurricane impact. Mateo stays connected with ornithological research in the Neotropical region through his role as an Associate Editor of Huitzil: the Mexican Journal of Ornithology. His current work in the UK combines applied conservation of the Barn Owl and farmland ecosystems with research on rough grassland management and Barn Owl population ecology.
