Martin Sullivan carried out his PhD at the University of East Anglia, investigating ways of predicting the potential distribution and impacts of non-native birds in the Iberian Peninsula. After that he worked as a Research Ecologist at the British Trust for Ornithology, before eschewing birds in favour of trees to take up his current position as research fellow in tropical forest dynamics at the University of Leeds.
