ECR Workshops

Day 1 | Tuesday 4 April 2023 | 1400 – 1600

We are running two workshops for BOU ECR members on the afternoon before the conference itself gets started, on the following topics:

  • Elevator pitches: The perfect way to start a conference. Learn and practice how to describe and promote your research project in under 30 seconds (it’s not as terrifying as it sounds – honest!).
  • Opportunities outside academia: Come and hear from a range of speakers about jobs, internships, and societal roles outside of academia. How have these benefited our speakers and how might they benefit you?

Workshops will take place in The Exchange (Jubilee Campus, Nottingham University) from 1400-1600 BST on Tuesday 4 April.

Please contact Angela Langford to register for these workshops.

Wildlife Acoustics Workshop

Bioacoustics as a research tool for birds: from data collection to analysis
Day 2 | Wednesday 5 April 2023 | 1315 – 1400 (over lunch) | Paul Howden-Leach, Wildlife Acoustics

A workshop looking at bioacoustics as a research tool for the study of birds. The workshop will look at the potential of bioacoustics in general followed by a walk-through of some equipment and potential deployment options to fit in with a variety of standard and non-standard protocols. Case studies will be used, and attendees own specific deployment needs will be addressed to design the most appropriate schedule for their potential study. Following on from this the workshop will move on to data analysis using Kaleidoscope Lite and Kaleidoscope Pro. This element of the workshop will focus on signal extraction, rapid data analysis, and building species classifiers. No previous experience in bioacoustics is needed.

No registration required – just show up on the day. Numbers limited to room capacity.

ECR Event

Day 2 | Wednesday 5 April 2023 | 1830 – 1945

Our annual roundtable event for ECRs, featuring an open bar and opportunity to speak with some of the wonderful people working within ornithology. Not to be missed!
